What is Art?
Art can mean a bunch of different things to different people. Depending on who you ask the answers could all be different. Some might say art is only drawings or paintings while others might include graphic design and photography. With a quick google search you’ll find the definition of art to be something along the lines of “the application or expression of creative human skill and imagination. Art is the creation of something in visual form, it takes creativity. There’s different things that make something art, but they don’t always have to be complicated. If it’s created by someone and is expressing something I personally would consider it art. When it comes to art, as long as one is being creative and making it their own I feel as though it could be considered art. Art isn’t just one simple category, it has branches that lead to other forms of creativity and expression. Some might even bring in the idea that music is a form of art since it’s used to express something and is a form of creativity. Although art can be seen as many different things for people, it is universally a form of expression in the form of something visual, whether it be a physical object or just a simple drawing, it’s all considered art.
What is Design?
Design is the composition in which art is brought together. The design of something is what makes the art unique to the artist. An artist could do a recreation of a previous existing piece and add their own personal design to it and it becomes a completely new piece of art. In simple words, design is the overall visual look and shape of an object. The design of something is all up to the artist, which is why it’s one of the most important parts to a piece of art. Without the design, an art can lose its creativity. In Google, design is defined as “the process of envisioning and planning of the creation of objects.” There are also 3 types of design, product, interface, and visual. The difference between art and design is that design can be used in other forms of creativity such as architecture and engineering. Design is used more often in the creation of physical objects such as buildings, cars, robots, etc. Design is a big principle in art because it requires a lot of creativity. Personally, I see design as one of the most important parts to a piece of art because it includes things that will create the overall finished product.
What is Craft?
Craft is a term usually used when describing a handmade physical object. Most commonly used in children's classrooms when describing a project. When used as a noun, a craft can be described as a skill in making things by hand. Craft can also be described in the sense of a profession like one's craft is that person’s specialty. When describing someone's craft in an art sense most will refer to it as something that is a hands on form of creativity. Some examples of crafts would be things like fashion, ceramics etc. Some will use the term craft to describe someone's specialty skill. The real significance between art and craft is that one is much more hands on and physical rather than digitally created. The term crafts has a history that began in the 19th century during the Arts and Crafts Movement, in which it was used to describe a style of decoration that was inspired by medieval times. Craft overall is just a way to call something more hands-on and is something that requires just as much creativity and skill as other forms of art.
