ARTIST BIO

Hello, my name is Emma Hernandez. I'm currently 18 years old and working to get my BFA at the University of the Pacific in Stockton! I specialize in photography and Digital Art with pieces of drawings as well. I grew up always wanting to be more creative but was never really given the gift growing up. I came from a family that wasn’t very creative artistically but I’ve always felt inspired by the things around me.

I began drawing anime and other cartoons that sparked my interest but the practice never stuck with me because of my lack of confidence in my work. When I was given my first phone my most used feature was the camera. No matter what it was I always wanted to have a memory of it, whether it was family, friends, or just the sky. I fell in love with photography at a young age because it became something I was very proud of and something I wanted to pursue in the future, in order to share my work with others. In high school, I began my love for the Adobe programs as I took Advanced digital art classes and became more familiar with programs like Illustrator and Photoshop. Along with those programs, I began to use Lightroom when editing my photography which became my favorite part of photography in general. When I was given my first advanced digital camera at age 15 I began to photograph anything that caught my eye even though I had no idea of any of the technicalities when it came to taking the pictures themselves. I was heavily inspired by film when I knew someone who got their first manual camera. The overall process of film is something I hope to improve on in the future. Although I specialize in photography I have made occasional drawings and paintings and hope to improve on those skills in the future.

Art Philosophy

To me art is a bunch of different things. It’s everywhere and in everything. When I look at art I think about how it was made and what the artist was thinking while they were making it. A lot of different ideas go into a piece of art and that's what I really appreciate most. The feeling of starting a project can be extremely overwhelming but that feeling of relief as you take a step back and look at the finished product can be super rewarding. For me I lean more towards my photography, I find that capturing a moment in time perfectly can be something so extraordinary. Getting that perfect photo and timing it perfectly is so satisfying. When it comes to portraits, seeing the look on the model's face when showing the final product gives me such joy. I hope one day to share my love of this art form across the globe and travel with the ones I love doing what I love. Art itself can be a form of therapy to some, thus making it such a versatile hobby. Having something to turn to when you just need to clear your head or put your feelings into something other than words can be comforting to some. Overall, art itself can help spread joy through those that can see it and I think that's the most important part. To me, happiness is something I hold at high value in my life so knowing that doing something like photography or listening to music or just looking through an art museum can make me happy is enough for me to strive to keep doing it for the rest of my life.

Artist Bio

As an artist I strive to always be learning and trying new things while keeping it original and my own. I always love to put my own take on things, even if it’s a little bit. I think having your own personal style can really make or break someone's work. Although I’m still developing a very specific personal style, I hope to achieve a look that is expressive and unique. With anything I do, I want there to be a story. Such as my photography, being able to achieve the best possible image is something that brings me so much joy and I hope to continue doing it throughout my lifetime. Along with being able to share my memories throughout the years, it can all be very rewarding.
